Sleep is not a single state. Across each night, you cycle through four distinct stages 4-6 times. Each stage serves different recovery functions. Understanding them helps you optimize sleep quality and use trackers wisely. Here is what happens in each stage.
The four stages of sleep

N1: Falling asleep
Lasts 5-10 minutes. Heart rate slows, muscles relax, brain waves slow. Easy to wake from. Light dreaming or hypnagogic images can occur.
N2: Light sleep
About half your total sleep. Brain temperature drops, body fully relaxes, eye movement stops. Spindles and K-complexes appear on EEG. Important for memory consolidation.
N3: Deep sleep (slow-wave)
The most physically restorative stage. Growth hormone releases. Tissue repair, muscle recovery, immune function. Hardest to wake from. Concentrated in the first half of the night.
REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
Vivid dreaming occurs. Eye movement under closed lids. Brain is highly active. Body is paralyzed (REM atonia). Critical for emotional processing, memory consolidation, and learning. REM dominates the second half of the night.
A typical 8-hour night
You cycle through these stages every 90 minutes or so. First cycle has the most deep sleep; later cycles have more REM. This is why cutting your last 2 hours of sleep disproportionately costs you REM sleep.
What disrupts each stage
Deep sleep: Alcohol, late-evening exercise, warm bedrooms, stress.
REM: Cutting sleep short, alcohol, certain medications (SSRIs), late caffeine.
All stages: Inconsistent bedtimes, noise, screens before bed, blue light.
